Volume 3, Issue 3

Dear Huron Academy Families,

Today marks the end of our first quarter for the 24-25 school year, and what a great start to the year it has been!  We’ve had students making short films, learning new instruments, making beautiful crafts out of fallen leaves, reading new books, learning new study skills, and some great games from our Husky boys soccer and girls basketball teams (with some support from the flag team as well!). Additionally, we had our first house event with the Aquila movie night, which was a great success, as well as Trunk-or-Treat, which was a great time as always!  It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the growth in our students and connect with families, and I hope this momentum carries on throughout the year.

With the holidays approaching, it can be hard to maintain that momentum, but parents, keep up your hard work!  I know how difficult it is to get out the door on time when it’s dark and cold, and by the time we get home, Monday folders, IXL, essays, and spelling packets aren’t what we all want to do. However, it is important that we stay consistent so our kids can learn the habit of resiliency and perseverance, which will lead them to a more successful life as adults.  Make sure you take some time to rest, recharge, and do fun things for yourself (like PTC’s “Night at the Races” event!) – stay strong so our kids can be stronger!

One thing I must address is some traffic concerns I’ve seen in both parking lots – aggressive driving,  looking at cell phones while moving in the line, arguing with others, turning left when the sign clearly says not to, etc.  To be sure, it is a very small minority of our families that are causing issues, BUT I bring this up because I’ve heard concerns from many (arguably a majority of parents), and the reality is that I must continue to address it until the issues are greatly diminished.  First off, it all sets a terrible example for our kids, who have seen more of this negative behavior than they should.  Secondly, as you know, we are in the midst of a new building project, and the admin team has been incredibly busy behind the scenes with planning and securing money for the project.  We have to work directly with the local municipality on this project, and if they keep getting calls from residents or other members of the community about traffic concerns (which has happened at a high rate this school year), it affects our relationship with them, which affects the approval of the permits needed to pull this project off.  In short, even though it may not seem like a big deal to turn left out of the Utica parking lot if there’s not a line of cars behind you, it affects the likelihood of us being able to open our doors for the 25-26 school year.

In short, in terms of both preparing for quarter 2 AND parking lot protocols, exhibit patience, kindness, and neighborly love, and everything else will fall into place.

Sincerely,

Joshua Sobczak,
Superintendent
